Traditional Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine

Acupuncture is one of the Modalities of Chinese Medicine. It involves the insertion of hair fine needles into specific points on special pathways, or “meridians” of the body to treat specific health conditions. These meridians and acupuncture points have been used over thousands of years in China to restore health.

Acupuncture is safe and gentle. There are many different styles and philosophies regarding the practice of acupuncture, all of which are effective. Some acupuncturists feel that in order for acupuncture to work most effectively, the needles have to be felt strongly. I believe that unless someone is used to that vigorous style of needling, and requests it, acupuncture should be as painless and gentle as possible. Studies, and my own experience, show that the gentle method is as effective.

During a treatment, one may experience a mild heaviness or tingling at the insertion site, or elsewhere on the body, or nothing at all. Either way,the needles are restoring the body’s energy flow or “Qi” to heal itself.

Conditions helped by Acupuncture according to the World Health Organization include:

I believe that acupuncture should be affordable for most people. I, therefore, offer a wide price range to try and meet most people’s needs, and charge a flexible amount.

Other modalities that can be used may include Moxibustion and Cupping Therapies.

Cupping Therapy
Cupping Therapy is using suction cups, generally on the back, to reduce congestion and pain. When there is a lot of stagnation, sometimes red marks may surface. It is not painful, but maybe sore, and can take a few days to resolve.

Moxibustion is the use of a Chinese Herb made into a cigar like form and burned near the skin on acupuncture points or areas of pain. I do not perform this in my office but can teach you how to use it at home as another tool of healing that you can do yourself.

Herbal Medicine:
Some conditions require the use of Herbal Formulas in addition to the acupuncture treatments to restore full health. This can be discussed at your appointment.

Herbal Remedies are safe when prescribed by a trained herbalist, and tested for purity, potentcy and safety. I was trained in Chinese Herbal Medicine during my acupuncture training and was required to pass the rigorous California State Acupuncture Board Examination which included Herbal Medicine. I only use herbal companies which maintain the highest standards of quality assurance.

I generally use three herbal companies for my herbal products:

Kan Herbal Company from California. They rigorously and consistently test their herbs for potency, quality and safety. They are made in the U.S.A. Please refer to their website for further information.

Health Concerns, also out of California, maintains quality assurance of all of their formulas which are made in the U.S.A. They test for optimum effectiveness, consistent potency and maximum bioavailibility. Please see for more information.

Golden Flower Chinese Herbs are originally from Taiwan but are subject to strict laboratory testing for potency and safety in their factory in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Please see www.gfcherbs.comfor further information.
